French designer Starck created a hydrogen refuelling station that has a mirror-polished stainless-steel casing and colour-changing dichroic glass. Starck's design was showcased at the COP28 climate summit in Dubai as part of the Green Zone a hub dedicated to energy transition technologies, innovation and decarbonisation.

Due to the station's mirror casing, one criticized Starck's lack of "consideration for birds crashing." Another questioned how "invisible" the station would be "when covered in dirt, mess, and ill-assorted stickers and notices," before describing it as "the wreckage of a fancy idea".

Chinese car manufacturer Nio has launched Blue Sky Lab, its own sustainable fashion brand, which has been shortlisted for a 2023 Dezeen Award.

Blue Sky Lab creates garments and accessories using materials left over from the car manufacturing process including seat belts, airbags and other car-grade fabrics to demonstrate how waste can be "creatively repurposed".

Nio has launched its own fashion brand

Nio claims the label is "the world's first sustainable fashion brand launched by an automotive company and brought to mass production".

Blue Sky Lab made its debut in 2021 at the Shanghai Auto Show and has since reused nearly 55,000 metres of waste fabric.

These car-grade surplus materials can help to create new high-performance products, according to the brand.

"Blue Sky Lab enjoys an innate advantage by adopting auto-grade materials in its fashion products as these materials outperform their consumer-grade counterparts to a large extent," the brand said.

"We think more about improving our products rather than blindly catering to the external environment. For example, the recycled materials from the airbags are light and durable with high strength, a perfect fit for lightweight fashion items."

The materials are simply sterilised and repurposed into a variety of products in line with the brand's minimal futuristic aesthetic.

"Regarding environmental protection, most visual communication tends to adopt nature and green elements," the company said.

"However, rather than being confined by such a monotonous style, we have chosen to find inspirations from our DNA and business areas including innovative technologies, manufacturing and industrialization, and lifestyle in carrying out product design."

"Blue Sky Lab has joined with global design talent including Nio's designers, Japanese architect Shuhei Aoyama, French leather goods designer Vincent du SARTEL, Finnish designer Rolf Ekroth, NIO user designers and designers from Parsons School of Design, Li-Ning and Allbirds," the brand added.

The brand told Dezeen it has mass-produced over a hundred different fashion items since its inception alongside tables, stools and lighting fixtures.

Blue Sky Lab has produced over 100 products using excess car manufacturing materials
Blue Sky Lab has also created furniture and lighting

The brand also partnered with an independent product testing and certification agency to calculate the carbon footprint of its bestselling products.

"Compared with their counterparts made of traditional raw materials, their footprint per unit is 18 to 58 per cent less," the brand said.

Blue Sky Lab has been shortlisted in the sustainable consumer design category of this year's Dezeen Awards.

Here, the brand is competing against the world's "first refillable" edge styler and soap-in-a-can brand Kankan.

Frame store in London by Studio FB

French interior design Studio FB and the co-founder of fashion brand Frame, Erik Torstensson, have designed a California-informed store for the brand in London.

The store's concept draws from the brand's Californian origins as well as European influences, which is reflected in the lighting, furniture and materials.

Frame store Marylebone, London, by Studio FB and Erik Tortensson
Studio FB designed a minimalist store for Frame

"The Californian universe with these modernist architectures with a free plan, skylights and the opening of spaces to the outside was our inspiration basis," Studio FB told Dezeen.

"We imagined this new concept design layout as open as possible, which can be compared to a gallery."

The store is arranged round a large central pillar

To create a greater connection with the street, the studio redesigned the facade by adding a curved, full-height glazed wall, which was set behind the original piers.

"We designed a long-curved glass like a contemporary insert which contrasts radically with the classic London pillars preserved," said the studio.

The studio aimed to create a gallery-like atmosphere

Within the store, the studio aimed to mimic the atmosphere of an art gallery with a polished concrete floor serving as a base for a central pillar constructed from stained birch wood veneer.

The store's rails were custom-designed with a distinctive hand-moulded abstract-shaped end-piece serving as the highlight

With in the fitting room, the ceiling, walls and doors were upholstered in fabric by textile company Kvadrat.

Custom-designed rails were created for the store

"The rounded central wooden element was designed as a sculptural object, which gives a residential feeling from the 50s," the studio explained.

"The backspace invites the cabins and lounge area becomes more intimate all-in fabric and brings sophistication to the space. Pieces of furniture and artwork sublimate the atmosphere," the studio continued.

"The general atmosphere is similar to an art gallery with raw materials such as concrete on the floor and white walls."

Fabric-covered walls in store changing area
The stores changing areas have fabric walls

FB Architects and Torstensson worked together to acquire artwork and collectable design pieces to reinforce the gallery atmosphere.

"It was a thorough process to ensure the most unique response possible to Frame," said the studio.

"Erik had a precise vision of his brand, so we exchanged a lot together on many artistic fields to build the brand's architectural DNA."

A sculpture by Serbian visual artist Bojan Šarčević crafted from wood and limestone sits in the display window. Also in the store are two original 1950s Gio Ponti stools, crafted from wood and textiles.

The store was decorated with wall-mounted fixtures designed by French lighting designer Jean Perzel, as well as geometric fixtures created by French architect Pierre Chareau, to create a soft and gentle lighting ambience.

Artworks feature throughout the store

Torstensson used AI as a sketching tool to design custom objects for the space, such as large brutalist stone tables and chrome custom-made sculptures that were then realised by architecture studios including Bucktron Studio Sweden.

"I've been learning and expanding my skills with AI for the last year, it creates a superpower when it comes to speed, as it allowed me to generate the visual concept at a greater pace and scale," said Torstensson.

"This creates exciting results and provides a new outlook on design. I simply use it to visualise my initial ideas in greater detail in order to bring my ideas to life."

The prospect of increased numbers of supertall skyscrapers in Austin in the next few years prompted residents to ask whether they are a cause for celebration or concern.

Commenters hotly debated the topic. One said that the construction of supertall buildings should be the least of the city's concerns, given that it has already committed what they referred to as "the usual American sins: car-centric design and single-family homes".

Another argued that the more "problematic issue" is that the towers are being built "on the outskirts" of the city.

Rom & Lupa chairs by Studio Lentala

Amsterdam-based Studio Lentala has designed the Rom & Lupa chairs to improve children's physical and mental health.

Named Rom & Lupa, the seats were designed to provide active sitting solutions following research by the studio that showed the negative impact passive sitting has on the physical and mental health of children.

Rom & Lupa by Studio Lentala
Studio Lentala has designed two playful seats including Lupa (above)

"Chairs shape our daily movement patterns, limiting our bodies to very few sitting postures and leading to us missing out on gentle muscular diversity," said Studio Lentala founder Boris Lancelot.

"The result is a negative cycle where inactivity leads to poor physical fitness, poor health and low self-esteem," he told Dezeen. "For these reasons, some have called sitting the new smoking."

Rom & Lupa by Studio Lentala
The Lupa chair was designed to encourage children to alternate between eight sitting positions

According to the studio, our bodies are able to take more than a hundred sitting positions, which are embraced in other countries including Japan and Indonesia.

This encouraged Lancelot to investigate ways to implement those practices into Western sitting routines, resulting in the design of Rom & Lupa.

Rom & Lupa by Studio Lentala
Rom & Lupa are made from FSC-certified birch

"In non-Western cultures, people exercise a much wider range of sitting postures in their daily life exposing their bodies to consistent gentle muscular activity which is vital for our social and physical development," Lancelot explained.

"The Rom & Lupa seats enable active sitting in a largely unconscious way since they are designed so that after a while each posture becomes slightly uncomfortable, which encourages the child to shift regularly between sitting postures," he continued.

"In other words, the design philosophy deliberately seeks to make sitting an activity"

The studio worked with movement scientists, Simon Caljouw, an assistant professor at the University of Groningen and John van der Kamp, an associate professor at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, to create the chair to allow freedom in mobility for school-aged children.

The resulting chairs – Rom that has a sloped seating platform and Lupa that has two felted areas connected by a lowered central section – encourage children to alternate between a range of eight sitting positions.

Rom & Lupa by Studio Lentala
The chairs were made from FSC-certified birch

"The two Lentala kid's seating designs are unique because they offer a range of at least eight different sitting postures, inviting children to explore these and additional possibilities," said Lancelot. "No posture is more desirable and each child can adopt postures that fit their needs and body."

"To enable wider variation in postures, the chairs are designed according to the 'principle of variation'. These selected postures are based on the most common universal sitting postures of all cultures and times,"he continued.

"The selected postures of the design come from testing positional changes.Designing a seat that serves the body involved an intuitive design process that took shape through physical sensation and experimentation."

Rom & Lupa were crafted from FSC-certified birch and topped with natural woollen felt.

"We aim to design for both healthy lifestyles and a healthy planet by using natural and renewable materials," Lancelot said.

"Sourcing birch wood from the nordics, the Lentala kids furniture pieces are produced in the Baltics where the birch veneer is also from."

Other seating designs recently featured on Dezeen include two oversized chairs made from steel and fibreglass designed by Yinka Ilori for an installation in east London and four benches which were installed throughout the Royal Docks as part of this year's London Festival of Architecture.

A group of investors named Flannery Associates has announced plans to convert 50,000 acres of farmland into a city in Solano county, northern California.

The plans have reportedly triggered disapproval by the local community due to Flannery Associates' quiet buying up of farmland.

The planned city prompted a fiery debate amongst readers. One questioned why the group isn't using its "wealth, power, and political influence" to resolve existing problems, whilst another theorised that the project aims to "evoke a sense of nostalgia and simplicity".
