Course: Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design (Product Development & Innovation Studio)
Location: Atlanta, USA
Course dates: August 2024 to April 2025
Application deadline: 2 January 2025

Georgia Tech's School of Industrial Design distinguishes itself through its commitment to the human condition and its multidisciplinary approach to problem solving.

Our undergraduate program offers a well-rounded and advanced course of study with a focus on human-centred design, critical thinking, design innovation and entrepreneurship.

As one of the largest ID programs in the US, we offer four studio themes specializing in product development and innovation, health and well-being, interactive product design and the emerging user experience and UI.

Students in the Product Development and Innovation II studio take on the challenge of identifying new markets and applications for bicycles given the boom in electrified drivetrains.

Students apply skills in user research, visual language and branding, advanced materials and process understanding, and trends to address a complex product (in this case, an e-bike).

They work with a combination of analogue and digital tools, prototyping in VR, tangible augmented reality (TAR) and physical media to develop novel and detailed bicycle designs.

The N-Force e-bike shown is designed for campus police officers. Students performed observation and deep-dive sessions with campus officers cataloguing their daily patrol routines, thereby combining the efficiency of a patrol car with the approachability of an officer on a bicycle.

Course dates: August 2024 to June 2026
Application deadline: 8 March 2024

The Master of Design and New Environments program at the Iceland University of the Arts offers an exciting hybrid curriculum merging design, media and environmental studies.

Over the course of two years, students are guided towards developing their research skills and designing creative projects, both individually and collaboratively.

The 2023/25 programme theme centres around climate and food systems. Here a collaborative approach is adopted, involving scientists, practitioners and industry partners.

Workshops in design and media studios at the IUA will provide a rich learning environment for students, developing their new skill sets which will allow them to contribute to meaningful solutions in these critical areas in the future.

One of the course highlights is during the first year, students immerse themselves in field research, design and science seminars, and site-specific case studies in autumn.

They engage in hands-on experimentation with diverse materials and technologies, which helps to shape their understanding of designing for new environments.

In spring, students embark on a dynamic residency in close collaboration with creative industry partners, in which they will experiment, materialise and tackle urgent environmental challenges in real-world contexts.

In year two, students choose their path in the practice-based track, which focuses on implementing innovative design solutions for environmental issues, or the theory-based track, which requires students to complete an MA thesis and an individual publication that explores the application of environmental design theories.

Applicants should hold a BA/BS degree or equivalent qualification. While a strong interest in design and the environment is preferred, we welcome applicants from diverse disciplinary backgrounds. Please find details of admission requirements here.

School: Iceland University of the Arts
Course: MArch Architecture
Location: Reykjavík, Iceland
Course dates: August 2024 to June 2026
Application deadline: 8 March 2024

We know one thing – what got us here will not get us there. The challenges of our time call for new radical, responsive, and revolutionary types of education.

The two-year master's in architecture MArch at the Iceland University of the Arts is devoted to the exploration of the meaning and scope of architecture and architects' multiple societal agencies.

Together, students and teachers explore the collective and collaborative nature of "architectures" – rather than singular architecture.

Architectures are intended as critical processes of enquiry, vehicles for raising social awareness, tools for imagining and advancing agendas of social justice, and as collaborative projects aimed at living together harmoniously.

The goal of the MArch is twofold. Firstly, to support students in developing knowledge, skills, traits, attitudes and behaviours necessary for becoming critical and caring societal agents who are able to relate to each other as diverse and equal beings.

Secondly, to build a strong community of teachers and students in architecture who explore together the wondrous possibilities that the field of architectural research can generate.

We use Iceland and its unique context as our laboratory for design exploration without forgetting that each place is deeply interconnected with the world.

The Certificate in Applied Color for Design course gives meaningful insight into how professional interior designers use color and underlying design principles to develop color schemes that make an impact.

The course combines three parts – The Art of Choosing Paint Color, Creating a Successful Color Scheme, and Transform an Existing Space with Color – to form a unified series of three online workshops.

Distilled from tried-and-true NYSID courses that have trained designers for decades, these courses build on what we already know, drawing out the innate sensitivity of the human eye and familiar vocabulary so students can understand more clearly how to utilize the ideas that make color such a powerful tool in interior design.

Because they cover different facets of the topic, the workshops can be taken alone or in combination.

Each workshop has been created to help both professionals and non-professionals work more effectively with color.

Registration for the three-series workshops is at a discounted rate and offers students a certificate from the New York School of Interior Design.

The Masters of Science in Architecture, Health and Design course at New York Institute of Technology challenges students to find innovative design solutions that benefit people's wellbeing.

School: School of Architecture and Design, New York Institute of Technology
Course: Masters of Science in Architecture, Health and Design (MSAHD)
Location: New York, USA
Course dates: September 2024 to May 2025
Application deadline: 15 January 2024

In this nine-month program, health is viewed as an ecosystem addressing the impact of the built environments and materials on human health, as well as care-related systems, services, prototypes and devices.

The core studio of the program, Atypical Architectures, is informed through complementary courses and skill-building workshops that involve an in-depth exploration of focus topics.

Atypical Architectures, taught by Professors Papadopoulou and Pongratz, is a two-semester design research studio addressing matters of neurodiversity and inclusion through the creation of products and environments for non-neurotypical users.

The studio is conducted in collaboration with occupational therapist Professor Alexander Lopez, director of the non-profit organization Inclusive Sports and Fitness, which aims at children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

The Atypical Architectures studio implements an experience-based, human-centered methodology that allows students to reflect on their own affective and sensory experiences and derive insights and conclusions from qualitative and quantitative analysis through onsite and user-based studies.

Through this MSAHD program, students build key competencies across computation and materials needed for designing preventive, therapeutic and ultimately healthy environments and interactions.

Students also build on each other's varied backgrounds as they enter the program with diverse skills and expertise from design fields, engineering, medical and health sciences, materials science, business, and natural and social sciences.

Together with their diverse and inclusive faculty of experts, students become empowered to address health from a systemic and embodied perspective, targeting aspects of the global environmental crisis or mental and physical disabilities through advanced material, technological and design solutions.

Research in the program involves computational design, programmable materials, biomaterials, sensors and interaction, generative and circular design solutions, inclusive design, affective mapping methods, and human and environmental health.

School: University of Florida (UF)
Course: Master of Interior Design (MID)
Location: Gainesville, USA
Course dates: August 2024 to May 2026
Application deadline: 1 February 2024

UF's interior design program is recognized as a leading program in the US with a strong international draw.

The Master of Interior Design educates students to become professionals in practice, to engage in research and to develop a specialization in the design of the built environment.

At the core of the MID curriculum are courses in interior design research methods and individualized master's thesis research.

By the end of their first year in the program – or second year for students with a bachelor's degree in a field other than design – each student selects a two-member supervisory committee to guide their course choices and thesis.

The work culminates in the successful completion, public defence and publication of the student's master's thesis work.

MID students graduate with the competencies to practice interior design plus valuable research skills.

The program takes two years to complete for those with a previous interior design undergraduate degree and three years for students with a non-design undergraduate degree.

MID graduates have the opportunity to pursue entry-level teaching positions within interior design programs. They can also enter PhD programs for advanced research specialization(s) in interior design or related design disciplines.

Course dates: January 2024 to January 2026
Application deadline: 15 January 2024

The Master of Industrial Design program at Georgia Institute of Technology teaches the skills and perspectives needed for an increasingly interconnected industry through empathic research, compelling user stories, demonstrated economic impact and unique product and service design solutions.

The multidisciplinary nature of design thinking and design research, combined with students with unique academic and professional experiences create an educationally-rich space of interdisciplinary minds within the this program.

The curriculum specializes in fortifying the designer's role in humanizing connections between people and technology, with a focus on the areas of interaction design, healthcare design, service design, product design and user-experience research.

Our students horn their design skills in a multidisciplinary learning environment. For instance, students in the Integrated Product Design course designed a functional, interactive device that enhances the dining experience.

Foodie Bot is an interactive menu system designed to make the ordering process quicker and more accurate, but with a big personality.

Restaurant guests would be able to view a projected menu in front of them, which includes images of the actual food, allowing them to easily visualise and select items from the menu.

The Foodie Bot's "eyes" change shape so that it has different expressions to communicate with guests as it waits for an order. A fully functional prototype was built, tested and validated with users.

Location: Oxford, UK
Course dates: continuously enrolling one-year course with a September start
Application deadline: 1 September 2024

The Master's in Architecture at Oxford Brookes University is a challenging 12-month course over three semesters. We set up a playground for students to experiment and speculate on personal ideas and the purpose of architecture.

The course cultivates new ways of thinking about architecture, exploring architecture beyond the commonplace and conventional.

Multiple mediums of experimentation and representation are explored – from collage, drawing and object-making to film, animation and AI.

Learning through experimentation and guided practice facilitates the construction of imaginative and critically reflective projects, which expand on current architectural thinking whilst enabling students to flourish in new fields of interest.

The Master's in Architecture immerses students in a creative learning environment, with its own dedicated studio for the concentrated unfolding of individual projects continually supported by academics, professionals and invited specialists.

Through accumulation and evolution, provocative architectural stances are generated that lead towards a final major project defined by the student's own set of ideas.

An exhibition of student work showcases the year and provides an excellent opportunity to curate and share work with a wider audience.

The course provides a unique environment for professionals who want to expand their current practice creatively and critically as well as for those who wish to build their knowledge and portfolio towards a PhD.

Course: MA Interior Architecture
Location: Oxford, UK
Course dates: continuously enrolling one-year course with a September start
Application deadline: 1 September 2024

Welcome to our MA in Interior Architecture, where the combination of architecture and interior design expertise helps you craft spaces that resonate with purpose and innovation.

This program centres on shaping inspiring environments across diverse scales, empowering students with mastery over dimensions, human scale, social dynamics and ergonomics

Drawing from over two decades of pioneering research and academic excellence, our MA expands horizons in the dynamic field of interior architecture. It serves as a transformative bridge, connecting architecture, interior design and social sciences.

Aligned with contemporary societal shifts, the emphasis is on the subjective experience within built environments, with a focus on experiential design inclusive of sociological, psychological and anthropological considerations.

Addressing the demands of modern lifestyles, inclusive design needs and multidisciplinary academic trends, we equip graduates with a profound understanding of human responses in built environments.

Our curriculum dives deep into crafting interiors that enrich human activities exploring sustainably the 'spatial art' of environmental design.

From the (re)purposing of structures to (re)defining spaces in both large public edifices and intimate domestic settings, students will develop comprehensive design methodologies to achieve meaningful affordances for the end-users of built environments.

Join us to be part of an interdisciplinary journey that bridges the gap between material and experiential aspects of architecture, nurturing graduates with purposeful skills to shape the future of design methodologies in interior architecture.

The Master of Industrial Design course at Zurich University of the Arts encourages students to think about how design can make technology more relevant to society.

School: Zurich University of the Arts
Course: Master Industrial Design
Location: Zurich, Switzerland
Course dates: September 2024 to June 2026
Application deadline: 19 February 2024

Driven by curiosity-based and practice-led exploration, the MA Industrial Design is a platform for imagining how design can make technology more relevant to our lives.

Through prototyping and debating tangible expressions of things to come, the course enables designers to play a meaningful role in shaping technological futures.

Designers are often taught to frame every issue, no matter how complex, as a problem to be solved. In the Industrial Design Master, we believe that designing for complex realities requires more inclusive approaches geared towards transdisciplinary exchange and collaborations.

The newly established programme builds upon a hybrid understanding of design in which its tangible and expressive potential aligns with imaginative and critical perspectives.

By expanding the concept of industrial design, the course brings together prototypes with thought experiments and innovations with speculations in exploring potential technological applications and their implications.

Against a backdrop of rapidly shifting ecological, societal and technical relations, students are empowered to go beyond convenience-driven and user-centred design to envision and enable opportunities for more meaningful forms of interaction.

The Master of Advanced Studies in Collective Housing (MCH) is a postgraduate full-time international professional program of architecture and design in cities and housing presented by UPM and ETH Zurich. After 14 editions, it is rated as one of the best architecture master's programs.

The program consists of 600 hours (60 ECTS). Participants will develop their design skills through an intensive series of seven one-week workshops and complete their knowledge in speciality modules, including energy and sustainability; housing practice; construction and technology; leadership, processes and entrepreneurship; urban design and city sciences; low-cost and emergency housing; and sociology, economy and politics.

Each specialty is coordinated by a technical director who lectures with a group of guest teachers and specialists from all over the world.

MCH has also built a close relationship with great architects who are regular workshop leaders, such as Dietmar Eberle, Anne Lacaton, Andrea Deplazes, Anna Heringer, Hrvoje Njiriç, Alison Brooks, Juan Herreros, Elli Mosayebi, Riken Yamamoto, Cino Zucchi, Jacob van Rijs, Alejandro Aravena and Wiel Aret.

It is the interaction between teachers and participants that generates the greatest results and production each year.

There are also planned trips in Madrid and Zurich, where buildings subject of study, housing-related institutions and universities will be visited, accompanied by architects and experts.
